Sowlar is a
start-up company that designs, develops and markets concentrating
photovoltaic (CPV) modules for use in generating solar energy. The
Company’s objective is to provide the world most efficient and
lowest cost per watt solar modules.
Traditional
PV modules usually employ single-crystal silicon cells with
efficiencies of up to 15%.
The silicon material is the major cost driver of
solar panels (40% of cost).
Most approaches taken to-date have been to reduce the silicon
material content by reducing the thickness of the cells
themselves to very thin films of the material.
Sowlar is
pursing a highly cost-effective approach which involves reducing the
area
of cell material required to
generate a given amount of electricity and using higher efficiency
multi-junction cells with much higher efficiency than Silicon.
Through sun concentration, Sowlar is reducing the semi-conductor
cell area by over 500 times and is using multi-junction cells with
40% efficiency resulting in PV modules with the lowest cost per
watt.
